Broad interest in nematode advisory programme NemaDecide Plus

The presentation of the strongly improved nematode advisory programme NemaDecide Plus on 28 May 2010 was attended by a large number of stakeholders from all agricultural sectors. NemaDecide is aimed at the prevention of nematode damage in potato cultivation. The new NemaDecide Plus programme has been expanded with a number of important nematode species.

During the presentation at PPO in Lelystad visitors could get acquainted with NemaDecide Plus. The advisory programme did already support the grower in controlling the potato cyst nematode and now also helps in controlling the root lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans) and the Columbia root knot nematode (Meloidogyne chitwoodi). The visitors were taken along the various experiments where it was explained how the data from these experiments are being incorporated into NemaDecide. Visitors also received specific information about the possibilities of the programme. And visitors were invited to test NemaDecide Plus for two weeks without charge. The current test version is still a beta version. The definitive version of the programme is expected in September. Click here to download the test version.

Inclusion of the Columbia root nematode and the root lesion nematode in the advisory system is an important step forward towards a quantitative nematode control system. Further development and expansion of NemaDecide remains desirable. The trichodorid nematodes form an important group of nematodes for which the advisory system cannot yet give a quantitative advice. These nematodes cause direct as well as indirect damage by transmission of tobacco rattle virus (TRV). NemaDecide does give a qualitative indication of the risk of damage.

Special attention was paid to the financial support by SNN (a cooperative body of the three Northern provinces Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe), Ministry of Economic Affairs / Kompas, Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), and Rabobank Project Fund. This support enabled the development of NemaDecide PCN as well as NemaDecide Plus. This resulted in a large amount of scientific knowledge being made available for application in practice.
